An Overview of a Warrior's Mind

An Overview of a Warrior's Mind

The mind of a true warrior (a WarriorSaint) is different from that of most other humans. In fact, it even differs from the mind of any usual soldier or fighter.
A true warrior is free from all worldly attachments. Any possessions are known to be temporary. Attachment leads to weakness within the warrior. The true warrior understands that the life he/she lives are temporary and attachment to even being a warrior is a weakness that will fail him/her ultimately. The only attachment the warrior has is to God, who is ever-present alongside the true warrior, both in life and after death.
A true warrior would not seek to harm innocent and defenseless humans or animals, even for his/her own survival, since the true warrior values the creation of God and does not seek to suppress or scare other beings. Hence, a true warrior is compassionate and mindful at all times.
A true warrior does not slander others or lay down challenges to satisfy his/her ego. A true warrior thinks of him/herself as a servant of God, a protector of His creation and a willing sacrifice to God's law of righteousness when called upon to serve Him.
A true warrior practices good deeds at all times, helping those that need help and serving God's true devotees. The warrior seeks to become a true devotee of God, above all else.
The true warrior harbors no malice or hatred for any being. The true warrior does not see people as friends or enemies, but as souls, which are a part of God. The true warrior harbors only love and respect for all beings, whether they be friendly towards him/her or not.
The true warrior is often soft-spoken and meditative. A true warrior has no desires. He/she is motivated by the love of God only. The warrior is careful not to consume things that will render his/her mind unreliably weak, unfocussed or addicted.
The true warrior is not concerned with outwardly appearances - he/she often may not seem to be a warrior at all. The true warrior spends most of his/her time in training the mind and uplifting the soul, as opposed to physical techniques. The true warrior understands that outwardly appearances are of no use on the battlefield, but the state of one's mind and spirit is everything.
The true warrior fights only when the right to life or dignity for any being is challenged. Even in battle, the warrior is merciful upon his/her opponent - not seeking to humiliate or defeat the opposing forces, but only to defend against their ill-conceived and dishonest attacks.
In battle, the true warrior does not worry about the past or the future, but concentrates on the present moment. The true warrior fights relentlessly, without the heavy weights of fear, pride and arrogance. The warrior seeks only to be a tool of God in battle. Victory always belongs with God, not the warrior, who is simply a servant of God.

Requirements for a Gatka Student

Requirements for a Gatka Student

There are four major interlinking areas that require development for any Gatka practitioner: Physical; Technical; Mental; Spiritual.

Physical Gatka is not overly demanding in terms of physical strength, which allows women and children to be equals in its practice. One must have strong stamina and flexibility, but muscular strength is not a requirement. The secret of Gatka technique lies in its free and flowing movement, hence the need for flexibility and stamina.

Technical Gatka technique is not difficult to pick up - there are relatively few set movements which a student encounters in the initial stages. It is for this reason that Gatka was easily picked up by the young warriors of the past and used effectively in battle. Advanced students do also practice the set movement techniques, but since the techniques quickly manifest themselves in the students' natural movement patterns it is not necessary to continually cover the same ground. It is important for any martial artist to manifest the technique of their art into their natural movement in order for the art to be fully utilized when needed.

Mental For advanced students, more importance is placed on achieving mental stability and alertness. Good physical conditioning and technique are of little use if one is not mentally prepared for the challenges one faces during a fight situation. A student's mind must be completely focused on the task at hand, free of all irrelevant worries, desires, concerns and hopes.

A good Gatka practitioner is often spotted by the nature of his or her personality and attitude. Ego has no place in the mind of a warrior, it is a disabling virus. Complete surrender of the mind (to God) must occur before the ills of the mind can be cleared.

Morally, one must be of high standards so that one feels confident and compassionate during an encounter.

Spiritual Mind conditioning can only take one so far - thereafter spiritual practice is essential to completely calm and enhance the mind, allowing for faster processing of information that is received via the five senses and instincts. Spiritually, the practice of Sikh teachings is encouraged in order to achieve the greatest strength of spirit. Elated spirits helps one to fight courageously. Previously unknown techniques manifest themselves in the art of the warrior whose spirits run high towards the ultimate Spirit of God.

Why learn gatka????

Gatka is a small part of our heritage (Sikh) Shashtar Vidiya which is totally ignored by majority Sikhs & especially Sikh Leaders. We (Sikhs) were blessed with this knowledge by all our Gurus. We had our own "Weapon less Art" & "Weapons Art" which is similar to Kung-Fu, Karate & other types of Martial Arts which originated in India and came back to us in the form of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, etc... In which that particular nation had attached their traditional & religious values which we adhere to, pay to learn and respect those when we or when we send our children to learn that particular art. There are few good Masters of Sikh Martial Art (search the net or ask around locally) who are eager to pass their knowledge to some sincere students. We need to take initiative to grab the chance with both hands to learn & support Akharas of Sikh Martial Art (SMA) and be the part of the instrument to bring Sikh Martial Art in line with other Martial Arts. Yes, I agree our Gurudwaras should sponsor good Gatka / Shashtar Vidiya Masters, but don't have any hope as our Pardhans are too busy doing nothing and wasting Gurudwara money for their own feudal political advantage with total disregard to Guru’s Hukam and Sikh History & Heritage, which does not do any good to Sikh community & Sikh Children. We are the ones who put them there if they don't listen to your requests do not vote for them, ultimately it is YOUR responsibility to do it. Sikh Martial Art should & must have Sikh traditional & religious values, because without these values the art will only be brute force. We are Not there to convert anyone, similarly you do not become Buddhist or anything else when you learn that particular Art.
